"Twilight" impostor kidnapped teen in Iowa, police say
BAXTER, Iowa - Police say they've jailed a man who pretended to be an actor in the "Twilight" movies in order to kidnap a teenage girl, reports CBS affiliate KCCI.
Thirty-three-year-old David LaVera, of San Diego, Calif., was arrested Tuesday after police officers in Jasper County, Iowa, received a call from the family of a kidnapped 14-year-old girl. LaVera is charged with enticing a minor, carrying weapons and failure to have a valid driver's license.
According to the station, relatives said an adult male approached the girl and claimed to be an actor in the "Twilight" movie series. The girl allegedly got into a vehicle with LaVera, but a relative tracked the car down and retrieved the 14-year-old moments before police caught up with the suspect.
Deputies arrested LaVera less than half an hour after the initial kidnapping report was made, KCCI reports.
Police said LaVera and the teenager began talking on Facebook, and the two had arranged to meet at a friend's house. Newton residents told the station they saw the suspect posing for photos in downtown Baxter over the weekend, and his online profile indicates he is a stunt man.
A search of LaVera's vehicle turned up two swords and other dagger-style weapons, according to KCCI.
Authorities said the San Diego resident arrived in Jasper County three weeks ago and started befriending teenage girls. He was even signed into two schools - Aurora Heights and Berg Elementary - where he walked around and signed autographs while posing as a famous actor, KCCI reports. School officials said there were no red flags about the situation.
