Trump speaks at unveiling of Boeing 787 Dreamliner -- live updates

President Trump at 787 Dreamliner plant: "God bless Boeing"

1:47 p.m. The event has ended.

1:43 p.m. Mr. Trump said that a number of companies have brought jobs back to the U.S. since the election last November, including Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler.

“When there is a level playing field,” Mr. Trump said, “American workers will always, always, always win.”

“When American workers win, America as a country wins, big league, wins,” he said.

The president said the administration won’t let America get taken advantage of anymore.

“You’ve heard me say it before and I’ll say it again: from now on, it’s going to be America first.”

1:39 p.m. The president began discussing his administration’s goal to rebuild the military, saying it is “going to ensure that our great servicemembers have the tools, equipment, training and resources they need to get the job done.”

“As George Washington said, being prepared for war is the best way to prevent it,” Mr. Trump said.

“On every front, we are going to work for the American people,” he said, adding that his focus “is all about jobs.”

“I will never, ever disappoint you, believe me,” he said. “I will not disappoint you.”

The president said there’s going to be a “penalty” for businesses that send jobs overseas, fire American workers and try to sell their products in the U.S.

1:36 p.m. “This is our mantra: Buy American and hire America,” Mr. Trump said. “We want products made in America, made by American hands.”

The president alluded to executive actions he signed last month authorizing the construction of the Keystone and Dakota pipelines and said that he wants the steel for the equipment to be American-made steel.

“We are going to fight for every last American job,” he said.

1:31 p.m. Mr. Trump has taken the stage and started chanting with the crowd “U-S-A,” and said, “I love South Carolina, I love it.” He then claimed that he won South Carolina in a “landslide.”

“That is one beautiful airplane,” Mr. Trump said about the Boeing Dreamliner behind him.

The president thanked the state’s current governor and thanked the former governor, Nikki Haley, for serving as his U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Mr. Trump said he’s attending the event today to celebrate engineering and jobs. The president began recounting the Wright brothers’ first flight in the neighboring state of North Carolina.

1:05 p.m. President Trump is scheduled to speak at the unveiling of the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft in North Charleston, South Carolina. He tweeted this morning that he was looking forward to talking about jobs and spending time at the plant.

The president’s visit comes a day after Boeing workers at the plant overwhelmingly voted against unionizing. The Associated Press reported that among the 2,800 workers who voted, almost 74 percent voted against union representation.

The revamped airliner will seat 330 passengers and hold 15 percent more cargo than another 787. It will be built at the Boeing plant in Charleston.

Boeing says the pressurization of the plane helps reduce jet lag and make the flying experience more comfortable, with larger windows and technology to avoid turbulence.
