Toyota moving U.S. headquarters

TORRANCE, Calif. - After more than a half-century in Southern California, Toyota is moving its U.S. headquarters to Texas.

The Japanese automaker said Monday it would begin the move out of Torrance starting in 2017.

Mayor Frank Scotto said at a press conference that he's "saddened" by the decision, adding that officials did everything it could to keep the car giant in the city. Scotto says he'll aggressively pursue another company to take over the site.

Toyota says the new office complex will bring together employees who are now scattered around the country. It will break ground on a new headquarters in Plano, Texas, this year.

Toyota will offer relocation packages to the 1,000 employees who currently work at the Torrance headquarters, which opened in 1982. Toyota's first U.S. headquarters opened in Hollywood in 1957.
