Toddler found near Miami Beach died after fall from sailboat

MIAMI BEACH -- Police are investigating the case of a 17-month-old who died Friday after falling from a sailboat where he lived with his parents, reports CBS Miami.

According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers, the child's mother was taking a nap and his father had gone for groceries when the boy went missing from the boat, which was docked between two islands, the station said. They said the child was unattended on the sailboat while his mother slept.

Miami Beach Police said they received a call about the missing baby at around 5:45 p.m. Friday. An officer found the baby floating in the water and he died after being rushed to a facility for treatment.

Miami Beach Police said they have taken over the investigation. No charges have been filed and the couple has not been identified by authorities.
