Tips for safer browsing on Safer Internet Day
Techies are gathering in Washington D.C. to take part in Safer Internet Day with an event to discuss how to protect yourself and your data online.
A panel of speakers includes representatives from Instagram, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Twitter, YouTube and Xbox Live. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) is delivering the keynote address.
In the video above, CNET’s Kara Tsuboi offers tips for how to be safer online:
- Protect your online privacy by browsing with hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS). The “S” stands for secure, which means it’s designed to prevent eavesdropping from a third party.
- Update your security settings on social media.
- Never use public Wi-Fi for shopping online or making financial transactions.
- Always use unique passwords for different accounts.
- Use a passcode for your phone.
- Lock your computer when you walk away.
