Police say the officer died after a vehicle hit him during a pursuit in Taylorsville in the early morning hours. The officer was reportedly standing outside his vehicle when he was struck.

Brotherson has been with a police officer with West Valley City since 2014. KUTV reports he is the first officer in the history of West Valley City to be killed in the line of duty.

In addition to the three arrested following the pursuit, a search was launched for possible additional suspects, police say.

The pursuit started with a separate incident in the area, Public Information Officer Roxeanne Vainuku said. She did not release information about the suspects or what they were wanted for prior to the pursuit.

West Valley City Police Chief Lee Russo was in the process of notifying the officer’s family. Police officials said they expected to release more information at a press conference Sunday morning.

The identification of the police officer and the suspects has not been released by officials.
