The Weeknd enters plea in Vegas officer punching case

LAS VEGAS -- The Canadian R&B artist known as The Weeknd has pleaded no contest to punching a Las Vegas police officer in a hotel scuffle in January.

Defense attorney Shane Emerick declined comment Monday about Abel Tesfaye's plea Wednesday to a misdemeanor battery charge.

Court records show a Las Vegas judge agreed to dismiss the charge if the 25-year-old Tesfaye stays out of trouble and completes 50 hours of community service.

Tesfaye also has to attend impulse control counseling and alcohol evaluation, and pay $1,000 to a Las Vegas police injured officers fund.

Police say the officer wasn't seriously hurt breaking up a fight at The Cromwell hotel.

The Weeknd is featured on Ariana Grande's "Love Me Harder." He was in Las Vegas for a nightclub concert.
