Unstoppable Steph Curry breaks NBA 3-pointer record
Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors hit his 300th three-pointer of the season on Monday night, smashing an NBA record with a quarter of the season still left. His team is on pace for the best pro basketball season of all time.
On the court there is no spot safe from Curry.
He's a relatively small player who just can't stop hitting big threes, including a game-winning 38-footer last weekend.
Tim Bontemps is the national basketball writer for the Washington Post. He says there's no precedent for Curry.
"Everybody is just captivated by this guy, who looks like a guy you could walk by on the street and you wouldn't even notice he's an NBA player," Bontemps said.
"He's kind of an everyman, but he goes on the court and just dominates everyone," he continued. "That's all anybody wants to do, is just hit crazy three-pointers."
Curry is on pace to hit more than 400 threes this year. The old record -- his own -- was 286 from last year.
He's of basketball blood -- his father Dell was a sharp-shooting 16-year pro, and his daughter Riley now steals the show at press conferences. But many forget Curry was not an immediate NBA hit. He battled bad ankle injuries, and only blossomed in his fourth year.
Critics say he benefits from softer defensive play -- as if any defense could stop him.
"You know, their opinion matters, but they are trying to view the game through the way they played it. It's not something you can do," Bontemps said of the criticism.
"The way Steph Curry plays is pretty fun."
With every theatrical three, Steph Curry is expanding the definition of a basketball superstar.
