The surprising reason Will Smith wanted to be famous

A major catalyst pushed Will Smith to want to become famous -- and it may surprise you.

The 47-year-old recently actor sat down with Benicio del Toro for Variety's "Actors on Actors" series and opened up about a lot of things, including his new film "Concussion" and why he sought fame as a teenager.

"When I was 15, my girlfriend cheated on me," he said. "And from that moment, in this bizarre psychological twist, I wanted to be the most famous entertainer on Earth because I believed that your girlfriend couldn't cheat on you."

The former "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" star called his reasoning a "bizarre psychological leap" -- something that he looks for in characters he plays on the big screen.

"Concussion" opens in theaters on Dec. 25.
