Thanksgiving forecast: Snow for East Coast?

MINEOLA, N.Y. - Getting over the river and through the woods could prove challenging for some Thanksgiving travelers.

The National Weather Service is tracking a low pressure system that could bring a coastal storm to the New York region just as millions of travelers are heading to their holiday destinations.

Meteorologist John Murray says the storm should be off the Carolinas Tuesday night and strengthen as it approaches New York on Wednesday.

Areas north and west of New York, including the Hudson Valley and southern Connecticut, could see as much as 6 to 10 inches of snow. The city and suburbs should see mostly rain. There is the possibility of an inch or two of snow as the storm clears the area early Thursday.

AAA spokesman Robert Sinclair is urging patience.

Meanwhile, The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning Monday for the Buffalo area, which received more than six feet of snow last week. The NWS cautioned that trees weakened by heavy snowfall and saturated soil could come crashing down.

Temperatures were expected to hit nearly 60 degrees on Monday in upstate New York, causing residents to prepare for evacuations that could be prompted by runoff from melting snow, and overflowing creeks.
