Texas woman, 22, charged in boyfriend's shooting death

GALVESTON, Texas - A Southeast Texas woman pursuing a career in law enforcement has been charged in the fatal shooting of her boyfriend.

Galveston County jail records show 22-year-old Claudia Kristine Esquivel was being held Tuesday on a murder charge. Online jail records do not list an attorney for Esquivel, who was arrested Monday and jailed without bond following a 911 call by her mother about a family violence incident.

Galveston police found the body of 27-year-old Christopher Chapa at a residence. Investigators located Esquivel at her mother's home.

Esquivel graduated in May from Galveston College's Law Enforcement Academy. Police Sgt. Joshua Schirard says records show Esquivel has not passed a state agency's licensing exam and is not yet a certified peace officer.
