Texas prison bus involved in deadly wreck

COMANCHE, Texas -- A prison bus carrying more than two dozen inmates has collided with a pickup truck in Texas, killing the truck's driver and injuring most of the inmates.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Robert Hurst says the bus was carrying 31 inmates and two guards when it collided Friday with the pickup near Gustine, about 90 miles from Waco. Authorities say the pickup failed to yield at a stop sign.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the truck driver was turning onto state Highway 36 and didn't notice the oncoming bus, CBS Abilene affiliate KTAB-TV reports. The bus T-boned the truck, killing the driver on impact.

Hurst says the guards and 21 inmates were transported to hospitals, including five inmates who were taken by helicopter. The remaining 10 inmates were taken to a prison facility in Gatesville that has an infirmary.

Hurst says none of the injures was considered life-threatening.
