Texas fugitive charged in 1979 murder

HOUSTON - Detectives in Houston say 36 years after a man fired shots into a crowd, killing one man and injuring another, a suspect has finally been charged, reports CBS affiliate KHOU.

Leon Dudley was 33 years old when investigators say he got into an argument with a waitress in the crowded parking lot of a restaurant, and began shooting. Stephan Tramble Chambers, 23, was killed, and Charles Eugene Philleo, 25, survived a shot to the mouth. Philleo died of natural causes in 1998.

Dudley allegedly fled Texas, where charges were filed against him soon after the Nov. 3, 1979 murder. He eventually ended up in Ohio, where he was living when a cold case investigator recently tried to contact him.

Police say Dudley was arrested without incident by local police in Euclid, Ohio, where he refused to cooperate with investigators.

Dudley has waived extradition to Texas and will be transferred to the Harris County Jail in the near future.
