Terminally-ill basketball player's charity raises $1 million

CINCINNATI - A cancer charity backed by basketball player Lauren Hill used a final push to reach her goal of $1 million in donations by the end of the year.

Hill got national attention when she played in a Division III basketball game with Mount St. Joseph on Nov. 2 despite suffering from an inoperable brain tumor, which was diagnosed a year ago. She made layups for the first and last baskets of the game.

To make sure Lauren would get a chance to play, the NCAA moved the Mount St. Joe season opener up two weeks. They also got a bigger gym to accommodate the ten thousand people who bought tickets, reported CBS News' Steve Hartman.

The freshman forward made an uncontested left-handed layup for the opening basket after her team one the tip. Her tumor that has forced the right-hander to shoot with her left hand because it has affected her coordination. The shot brought a standing ovation from a sellout crowd at Xavier University's 10,000-seat arena .

Hill, 19, has since November helped raise more than $775,000 for cancer research and treatment through the charity called The Cure Starts Now.

The charity tweeted that a telethon Tuesday helped it reach the goal set by Hall to raise $1 million by the end of 2014.
