Teen killed, two others injured by lightning in West Virginia

FAYETTVILLE, W.Va. - Authorities say one West Virginia teenager has died and two others are injured after they were hit by an apparent lightning strike while fishing.

A press release from Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler says emergency crews responded around 3:30 p.m. Monday to reports that three people had been injured by a lightning strike in Fayetteville, about 60 miles southeast of Charleston. First responders found three 17-year-old boys injured.

Kessler says the boys were fishing at a pond when a severe thunderstorm hit and lightning apparently first struck a nearby tree.

A dispatcher at the Fayette County 911 center who declined to give her name, citing county policy, confirmed early Tuesday that one teen has died. She says one is in critical condition and the third is expected to fully recover.

The teens' names haven't been released.
