Stephen Colbert gets a "Late Show" premiere date

Stephen Colbert will take over the "Late Show" on CBS on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Known for his satirical Comedy Central series "The Colbert Report," Colbert will be taking the reins from longtime host David Letterman, who announced he would be stepping down for the post last year.

"I have nine months to make a show, just like a baby. So first, I should find out how you make a baby," said Colbert.

"The production office is open, the premiere date is set, and we're incredibly excited to welcome the creative and comedic genius of Stephen Colbert to CBS late night this fall," said Nina Tassler, chairman of CBS Entertainment.

Letterman will retire from the CBS late-night show after a whopping 21 years. His final broadcast is set for May 20.
