Spring flowers: A sea of rainbows bloom in Calif. despite drought

Spring has arrived: California flower fields in bloom

Spring has arrived! While parts of the country are still in a deep freeze, the hills of Carlsbad, Calif. are in bloom. Over 70 million vivid yellow, orange and red Ranunculus flowers blanket the coastal city.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are home to over 50 acres of flowers that bloom for about six to eight weeks a year. The fields look like a sea of rainbows and have delighted natives for decades.

This year is unusual because the bloom is three weeks early, according to the farm's Facebook page. California has been in a tough drought this winter, but the flowers have thrived because the farmers have previously installed recycled water pipes, which allows the farm to use the city's reclaimed water.

Visitors can see the flowers from March 1 through May 11.
