Spinning Sofia Vergara sparks debate among Emmy viewers
There was a bit of a Twitter uproar during Monday night's Emmy broadcast when Sofia Vergara was asked to simply stand onstage quietly, and spin.
Meant as a silly bit to make light of how people may tune out during the president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Bruce Rosenblum's speech, the 42-year-old "Modern Family" vixen was placed on a rotating pedestal as Rosenblum addressed the audience. "We never forget that our success is based on always giving the viewer something compelling to watch," he said with a wink.
Many viewers found the spinning Sofia joke to objectify women on a night when 29 percent of the nominees were female.
One person who didn't find it offensive was the actress herself. "I think it's absolutely the opposite," she told told reporters. "It means someone can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself and enjoy and work and make money, so I absolutely think it's ridiculous. And somebody who started this, and I know who she was, has no sense of humor and should lighten up a little bit!"
Here's a few Twitter responses to the Emmy moment that stirred strong points of view on both sides. Tell us which side you're on:
I love @SofiaVergara but did anyone find that schtick somewhat offensive?

Sofia Vergara objectified on stage by president of an awards show that has only twice awarded a Latina woman with an acting award #Emmys

I feel like Sofia vergara should just always be on a rotating pedestal. If I looked like her I would just be on one 24/7. Sexism be damned

Dear @SofiaVergara: I'm sorry that feminists found you loathsome last night, but embrace sex simulation and stripper poles as breathtaking

Too bad @SofiaVergara refuses to acknowledge that she was used as a sexist prop. She's never gonna b taken seriously, bc she buys into it
