South Florida mall shooting: 1 dead, 1 injured

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- Investigators are trying to determine the motive that led to a fatal shooting between co-workers inside a mall in Coral Springs, CBS Miami reports

The day after Black Friday, the Coral Square Mall was filled with holiday shoppers around 10 a.m. Saturday when shots were fired inside a store.

“You don’t picture something like that happening to you,” said Domanique Burnett, a mall employee. “You see it on the news every day but it’s like, it’s happening to me right now!”

Many were left in a state of confusion.

“There was some people running and there was some people just standing there,” said Paige Hall.

Still, others were curious at the sound of gunshots.

“Some people were walking towards it,” said Burnett. “And then after they started walking towards it, you know, they got startled and started running back.”

Both girls work at a kiosk in the mall and now have second thoughts about returning.

“I don’t know if I want to work in the mall,” said Burnett. “Because our kiosk is not like a closed-off store. It’s out in the open.”

The shooting happened inside the Fast-Fix Jewelry and Watch Repairs shop. Police say the owner, identified as Gus Kiriazis, shot his employee, Sabas Anthony Ferrer, before turning the gun on himself.

“We still don’t know the motive,” said Coral Springs PD Det. Ernesto Bruna. “We know that Gus was the owner of the store and Sabas was one of the employees. Gus shot the employee Sabas and then killed himself.”

Sabas was taken to the hospital in critical condition but he has since improved and was later listed in stable condition.
