“Soft targets": Ice cream trucks hit by NYC thieves

NEW YORK -- Ice cream trucks have proven to be a soft target for thieves this early spring in Queens, N.Y., where vendors who drive for "Mister Softee" say they have been robbed of at least $3,000, CBS New York reported.

"They just broke into it and stole all the money we had inside," said Mister Softee truck owner Mohamed Baksh.

The robberies have taken place overnight in at least two lots where the trucks park.

At the Mister Softee truck lot in South Ozone Park, owners believe someone climbed the fence on two occasions and robbed the trucks of hidden cash.

Iman Khan, the wife of the lot's owner, said the suspect smashed the serve windows on the side of the trucks to squeeze inside. She told CBS New York there is surveillance video, and she isn't shy about pointing the finger at an unnamed former ice cream vendor.

"We know who is it from that (surveillance video)," Khan said.

More than a dozen ice cream trucks were broken into in a lot in Queens Village, the station reported.

New security cameras are being installed, signaling a tough new posture; as CBS New York put it - no more 'Mister Softee.'
