Shane Montgomery's body found in Schuylkill River, family says

PHILADELPHIA -- A missing West Chester University student's family said his body was recovered Saturday, CBS Philadelphia station KYW-TV reports.

Shane Montgomery's body was found by search and rescue teams late Saturday morning in the Schuylkill River behind Manayunk Brewery Company along Main Street, less than a ten-minute walk from where Montgomery, 21, was last seen after leaving Kildare's Irish Pub early Thanksgiving morning.

"Today we have done what we promised. We found and brought Shane home," Karen Montgomery, Shane's mother, told reporters Saturday near the riverbank.

Her voice cracked as she thanked everyone involved in the search and asked that the family's privacy be respected as they mourned their loss.

The discovery of the body ends a more than five-week search for Montgomery, which included efforts from local dive teams, Philadelphia police, the FBI, thousands of volunteers and a massive social media campaign. A reward fund had grown to $65,000.

Authorities had not yet confirmed the body's identity pending a review by the Philadelphia medical examiner's office.

Divers found Montgomery's keys along the river on Dec. 21.

Last month, his mother spoke at a candlelight vigil on the West Chester campus about the family's frustration.

"The frustrating part is that there are no leads -- no one knows what happened to him," she said. "It's a nightmare I can't wake up from."
