Scott Pelley honored with Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism
PHOENIX -- In recognition of his 40-year career, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University honored “CBS Evening News” anchor and managing editor Scott Pelley with the 2016 Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism.
At the award luncheon in Phoenix on Monday, Cronkite School Dean Chris Callahan said that Pelley is “in many ways the standard bearer of the kind of journalism that Walter Cronkite defined for so many of us.”
“Walter is alive and well at CBS News. And we live his values and his principles every day,” Pelley said. Watch the video above for his full remarks, including his thoughts on the troubling rise in fake news.
CBS News recently commemorated the centennial of Cronkite’s birth, andPelley discussed the important place that Cronkite still holds in the “Evening News” newsroom.
Walter Cronkite himself presented the first awards in 1984 to CBS founder William Paley and longtime CBS president Frank Stanton. Other recent recipients include “CBS This Morning” co-host Charlie Rose and former “Face The Nation” moderator Bob Schieffer.
