Thief takes ambulance on wild ride with fiery end

SAN FRANCISCO -- A thief stole an ambulance in downtown San Francisco Tuesday morning, leading police on a chase on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge before crashing, CBS San Francisco reports.

According to police, the ambulance was responding to a 911 call at the Ambassador Hotel in the city's Tenderloin District around 8 a.m. While paramedics were attending to a person inside, a thief jumped into the vehicle and drove off.

Police were able to track the ambulance with the vehicle's GPS. The ambulance led authorities on a chase to the Bay Bridge heading east, where the ambulance crashed and caught fire at the Treasure Island off-ramp.

The suspect managed to escape from the ambulance after the crash. She refused to be treated for injuries and was arrested.

Authorities opened the off-ramp around 10 a.m.
