San Diego prison investigates inmate "mannequin challenge" video

SAN DIEGO -- Inmates at a Southern California prison are under investigation for taking part in a “mannequin challenge” video inside a prison dorm.

The one-minute video shows inmates in several frozen stances -- one in the bathroom, others fighting and one holding a prohibited cellphone.

It had been viewed more than 100,000 times on YouTube by Tuesday.

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokeswoman Terry Thornton said one inmate has been transferred from a dorm setting to an individual cell as part of an ongoing investigation.

Thornton said the video was taken in November inside the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.

A video recently surfaced showing inmates in an Alabama prison in various frozen positions.

The mannequin challenge started around Halloween with students at a Jacksonville high school, using the hashtag #MannequinChallenge.

Then other schools joined -- in their classrooms, lunchrooms, and pep rallies. Many are set to rap duo Rae Sremmurd’s song “Black Beatles.” The challenge soon became a viral sensation.
