Rubye James missing: Remains found in shallow grave in search for Fla. woman, 92

LEESBURG, Fla. -- Human remains were found in a shallow grave Wednesday during a search for a missing 92-year-old central Florida woman, reports CBS affiliate WKMG.

Police have been searching for Rubye James since she went missing under suspicious circumstances from her home in Leesburg, where she reportedly lives alone.

A friend told WKMG she went to check up on James after she didn’t hear from her, and saw a shoe and glasses on the woman’s porch. She said she knew something was wrong and called police.

When responders entered the home, “they realized pretty quickly that something had taken place that was out of the norm, and actually suspected foul play at that point,” Lt. John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office told the station.

James’ car was also missing. Investigators later found the vehicle at an apartment complex about five miles away. K9s found the remains buried a short distance away in a wooded area, the station reports.

The remains have yet to be identified.

Police tell the station James is estranged from some of her family members. They have not named a suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 352-343-2101 or Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
