2 killed when car crashes into crowd at Tenn. festival
SELMER, Tenn. -- Two people were killed when a vehicle drove through a barricade at a music festival and car show Saturday, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said.
CBS affiliate WBBJ reported an elderly couple drove through a barricade and into the crowd gathered for the Rockabilly Highway Revival Festival in Selmer, according to the highway patrol.
"I heard a car coming but I just thought they were, like, going down the side roads or something," witness Alayna Dard told WBBJ. "And then, next thing I know, everyone was yelling, 'Watch out, watch out!' And I took a step back, and then, next thing I knew, all I could see was bodies in the road."
The couple drove almost four blocks through the festival, hitting a man and a woman, authorities told the station.
"The lady was trying to outrun them... And she got caught up under the bumper and the gentleman got thrown up into the air," witness Tony Chapman said.
The victims were not identified.
Lt. Brad Wilbanks said in an email that one person was also airlifted to a local hospital after Saturday afternoon's crash. WBBJ reported the person taken to the hospital was the car's driver.
A post on the festival's Facebook page said a community-wide prayer meeting was held Saturday evening.
Selmer is about 40 miles south of Jackson, Tennessee.
