Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to induct a new class for 2014

A new batch of top-notch musicians will get to add Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee to their bios very soon.

Thursday marks the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and this year's honorees include Nirvana, Cat Stevens, Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Linda Ronstadt Hall and Oates and the E Street Band.

The evening will be chock-full of performances and stars -- and some surprise guests. Chris Martin, Glenn Frey, Michael Stipe, Questlove, Peter Asher and Tom Morello are all expected to attend, and Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Carrie Underwood, Emmylou Harris and Sheryl Crow will do a musical tribute to Ronstadt.

Bruce Springsteen will induct his E Street Band; Michael Stipe of R.E.M. will be on hand to induct Nirvana, 20 years after the death of singer Kurt Cobain. Surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic will be in attendance.

KISS star Paul Stanley on fame, feuds and secrets

Kiss, though, has stirred up some controversy surrounding the Rock Hall induction. Founding members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons say they're not performing at the gala because the Hall of Fame is only inducting original members -- and not current players Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer.

Stanley told CBS News he's not thrilled about the induction this year, which comes 15 years after KISS first became eligible: "I see it as dubious. We are the bitter pill that they ultimately had to swallow. Because they don't like us. And the only reason they're inducting us is because they begin to look foolish at some point for not having us in."

The 29th annual ceremony will air May 31 on HBO.
