Retired soccer star Abby Wambach charged with DUI

PORTLAND, Ore.- Retired World Cup soccer championAbby Wambach was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence.

The 35-year-old, whose given name is Mary Abigail Wambach, was booked at 2:02 a.m after being arrested by Portland police, reports CBS affiliate KOIN in Portland.

Portland police Sgt. Peter Simpson said in a statement Sunday that a sergeant stopped Wambach Saturday night after she reportedly ran a red light in her Range Rover near downtown.

Simpson says Wambach failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. He says she also failed a breath test at the police precinct.

She was booked into Multnomah County Jail early Sunday on investigation of driving under the influence. KOIN reports Wambach was polite and cooperative with officials. Jail booking records show she was released Sunday on her own recognizance.

Wamback later took to Facebook to apologize.

Wambach, a winner of Olympic and FIFA world player of the year titles, retired from the U.S. women's national soccer team at the end of last year.

She has been central to the growth of women's soccer, even drawing the glowing admiration of President Obama.
