Report: Unborn child gets lawyer in Bali "suitcase murder"

CHICAGO - The unborn baby of a Chicago teenager suspected of murdering her mother and stuffing her body into a suitcase while on vacation in Indonesia is reportedly getting its own attorney.

The Chicago Tribune reports that attorney Vanessa Favia told reporters on Wednesday that she would be representing Heather Mack's unborn child. Favia said Mack, 19, is three months pregnant.

Mack and her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, 21, were arrested in August after the body of Mack's mother, 62-year-old Sheila Von Wiese-Mack, was found in the trunk of a taxi parked in front of The St. Regis Bali Resort in the island's upscale Nusa Dua area, where she had been vacationing with her daughter, authorities said.

Mack and Schaefer have not been charged in Weise-Mack's beating death but are being interrogated by police in Indonesia.

The Tribune reports that Indonesian authorities told Reuters that Mack would not receive special treatment because of her pregnancy.

"I'm here to make sure that she's getting proper nutrition and ... all the medical attention she needs, so that she can have a healthy baby in the future," Favia said, according to the Tribune.
