Report: Chicago college student shot, killed over cell phone

CHICAGO - A college student in Chicago was fatally shot in the head while walking home from school after two men robbed him and a woman of their cell phones on Thursday, reports CBS Chicago.

Kevin Baker, a 19-year-old freshman at Harold Washington College, had been in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn following the incident but succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Baker was walking home from school with a cousin in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood around 4:15 p.m. Thursday when a dark-colored van pulled up and two men got out, one of them wielding a handgun, according to CBS Chicago.

The two men reportedly told Baker and his cousin to hand over their cell phones.

Police said the victims did everything right by giving up their phones, but as the robbers walked away, one of them shouted at Baker, then shot him, reports the station.

No arrests had been made in the shooting, reports the station.
