Report: Calif. man accused of keeping girlfriend captive
Authorities in California say a man has been jailed on suspicion that he kidnapped his girlfriend, allegedly keeping her captive at his Palmdale apartment for days.
Giovanni McKinnis, 19, is accused of assaulting and kidnapping his 19-year-old girlfriend at her mother’s home on Christmas day, reports CBS LA. The station reports the woman’s mother didn’t report the incident out of fear for her safety.
The woman’s father alerted authorities in Palmdale Saturday that his daughter had been missing for 10 days, reports the station. Investigators reportedly discovered the victim in McKinnis’ apartment.
“When the deputies found the victim, she was hidden inside the apartment and appeared extremely fearful,” a police statement said.
She had reportedly been beaten and sexually assaulted.
Police told the station the woman had been choked several times until she lost consciousness. No restraints were found, according to authorities, but the woman reportedly feared being beaten again if she didn't follow the suspect's instructions.
McKinnis has since been booked on suspicion of attempted murder, kidnapping, domestic violence, false imprisonment and a restraining order violation, reports the station.
