Rare African gray parrot stolen from Calif. pet store

BREA, Calif. -- A store manager of a local pet store in Brea, Calif. tells CBS Los Angeles that a rare bird was stolen and could die if not returned soon.

The five-month-old African gray parrot was stolen around 1:30 p.m. Saturday when two men went into the store and stole the parrot from a bird stand, according to the station. The suspects had spent a few minutes walking around -- as if they were browsing, store manager Connor Chubbuck told CBS Los Angeles.

After one of the men picked up the parrot, the two ran out, reportedly fleeing in a dark minivan.

The missing bird is described as all gray with a short, bright red tail and dark eyes. The young bird, who is still being hand-fed and will die if he's not returned, is worth $1,600, Chubbuck told the station.

One of the suspects is described as an African American male in his 40s, about 5-foot-11 and 250-290 pounds. The other is described as a Hispanic male in his 40s, about 5-foot-11 and weighing at 200 pounds, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Anyone with information about the bird or the theft is encouraged to call the Brea Police Department at 714-990-7625.
