CBS News elections director talks polls on Trump's first 100 days

The first words that occur to most voters when they think of President Trump are negative, a new poll finds.

According to a new Quinnipiac University poll, words like "idiot", "incompetent" and "liar" were the top three responses -- with over 30 times a response was provided for each of those given words.  The top positive word that came up was "leader," which garnered the fourth highest response, tied with "unqualified."

Quinnipiac asked respondents, "What is the first word that comes to mind when you think of Donald Trump?" Here were the most common words:

  • "Idiot"  39 times
  • "Incompetent" 31 times
  • "Liar" 30 times
  • "Unqualified" / "Leader" 25 times each
  • "President" 22 times
  • "Strong" 21 times
  • "Businessman" 18 times
  • "Ignorant" 16 times
  • "Egotistical"  15 times

Other notable mentions: "Bully" with 11 times, "Arrogant" with 12 times and "A--hole" with 13 times.

Overall, the latest polling figures found that voters who gave Trump a slight approval bump after ordering a missile strike in Syria following the chemical weapons attack, now give him a near-record low of 36-58 percent job approval rating.

From May 4th - 9th, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,078 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
