Poll: Nearly 60 percent said Donald Trump Jr. shouldn't have taken Russia meeting
A majority of people in the U.S. say Donald Trump Jr. shouldn't have taken a meeting with a Russian lawyer who offered negative information about Hillary Clinton, according to a survey released Friday by SSRS for CNN.
The poll found 57 percent of people polled said he shouldn't have taken the meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya, while 23 percent said he should have taken the meeting. Eighteen percent said they don't know or are undecided.
A plurality of Republicans, 48 percent, said Trump Jr. should have taken the meeting, and 36 percent said that he should not have. Eighty-three percent of Democrats said he shouldn't have taken the meeting.
The poll also found that 59 percent of people have been following news about Russia's efforts to influence the 2016 election very or somewhat closely and 39 percent said they are not following it too closely or not closely at all.
The president's eldest son has come under fire for the meeting, as more details have been surfacing in press reports over the last week in terms of who attended. He's scheduled to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee next Wednesday with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. The president's son-in-law Jared Kushner is scheduled to be interviewed by the Senate Intelligence Committee Monday behind closed doors.
The poll surveyed 1,019 people between July 14 and 18 with a 3.7 percentage point margin of error.
