Police: Teacher, aide abused non-verbal autistic student

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Two employees of an Alabama high school were arrested Thursday for the alleged long-term physical abuse of an 11-year-old autistic student who does not have verbal communication skills, according to the Tuscaloosa Police Department.

Mildred Basye, a teacher at Oak Hill School in Tuscaloosa, and Flora Bryant, a classroom aide, turned themselves in on third degree assault charges. The school serves students with special needs.

Police said one of the child's parents received an anonymous tip about the alleged abuse, and the parent contacted police.

The person who contacted the parent said the abuse has been going on since August 2015, according to police.

Both suspects were booked into Tuscaloosa County Jail and held on $500 bond.
