Police say 7-year-old brought loaded gun to school

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. -- If you see a gun in school, tell a teacher. That's what happened at an elementary in Tennessee, and no one was hurt after police say a 7-year-old boy carried a loaded 9-millimeter gun in his backpack Thursday morning, CBS affiliate WVLT reports.

The Tennessean reports that Westside Elementary School in Springfield, Tennessee went on lockdown after the boy showed the gun to another student. That student told the teacher, who contacted school administrators, who called police.

Springfield Police Chief David Thompson says the boy was not threatening anyone, but has been charged with unlawful gun possession as the investigation continues.

The station reported that officers said the student showed the loaded 9-millimeter handgun to classmates.

According to WTVF, the child was cited for unlawful possession of a firearm, and released to DCS.
