Police: R.I. woman strangled girlfriend during argument

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- A Rhode Island woman is facing domestic murder charges for allegedly strangling her partner at a Middletown apartment.

Police were called to the residence at around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday by a relative of 33-year-old Melissa Sue Anne Castle, saying that Castle told her she had just killed someone.

Police say when they arrived at the apartment, they found 34-year-old Rachael Kilroy on the second floor of the unit. Police say Castle told them she choked Kilroy after an argument escalated into violence.

The medical examiner pronounced Kilroy dead at the scene. An exact cause of death hasn't been determined, but police say she appears to have been strangled.

Castle is being held without bail. Her public defender did not comment.
