Police: Man threatened to "blow Philly officer's head off"

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia police have jailed a man they say threatened to "blow an officer's head off" before the man could be subdued with a stun gun.

Twenty-year-old Shareef Haynes is jailed on aggravated assault, terroristic threats and other charges for the confrontation Wednesday evening with Officer Michael Edwards.

Police say Haynes walked up and knocked on the window of Edwards' car and the officer asked if Haynes needed help. Instead, Edwards made the threat then tried to hold the door shut.

Edwards called for help and eventually got out of the car. That's when officers say Edwards pulled his hands out of his pants and made a shooting gesture, but didn't have a gun.

Veronica Haynes says her son has mental problems, and she's thankful he was subdued and not shot.
