Police: Man shot by police stabbed and beat family with baseball bat

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Authorities have released the name of the Fairfield man shot and killed by police responding to a domestic violence call that sent a woman and three children to the hospital.

State police say 51-year-old Christopher Andrews was shot to death Tuesday by police officers he confronted in his driveway.

Police were called to his home at about 6 a.m. after a young female called 911, reports CBS affiliate WFSB. Investigators say Andrews wouldn't comply with demands to stay where he was and made a lunge at an officer, the station reports.

Inside, police found the man's wife and her three children, ages 12, 13 and 15, injured inside. The station reports they suffered from a baseball bat attack and stab-like wounds.

All four were transported to hospitals. The wife was listed in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital. The youngest child had to be airlifted to Yale-New Haven hospital, the station reports.

The officer who shot the man also was taken to a hospital for observation.

The circumstances of what may have led up to the attack remained under investigation.
