Police locate mother of newborn abandoned behind Connecticut grocery store

DANBURY, Conn. -- Police say they have identified the mother of a newborn boy whose umbilical cord was still attached when he was found abandoned behind a Connecticut grocery store.

The baby was wrapped in women's clothing when he was found Sunday night in Danbury, and images of that clothing made public helped lead police to the mother early Friday.

"The Danbury Police Department would like to thank the media and the public who were integral in assisting us with this investigation," police said in a news release. "Through the photographs and information which were disseminated by the media to the public, we were able to quickly identify the mother."

It's unclear if the mother will face abandonment charges. Her name was not released. Police have only said that the mother is being treated at a local hospital, reports CBS affiliate WFSB.

The baby boy, who was just a few hours old when he was found by a man who called 911, also remains at the hospital.

In the 911 call obtained by the station, the man who discovered the child is heard telling a dispatcher: "I just find a little boy, a little child. Somebody drop it, and it's right here."

The dispatcher replies: "Somebody dropped a child off?"

The caller then says, "Yeah, the little boy is right here. It's crying."

The caller is heard telling the dispatcher he doesn't know who the child is and directing them to the location.

Connecticut has Safe Haven law that allows parents of infants 30 days old or younger to bring the child to a hospital without fear of charges.

Police call the investigation ongoing.
