Police in Washington state fatally shoot man at lumberyard

LAKEWOOD, Wash. - Police in Washington state say officers fatally shot a man who had climbed up 25 feet to hide in a pile of wood at a lumberyard.

The News Tribune reports that Lakewood Lt. Chris Lawler says police responded Tuesday afternoon to investigate reports of a suspicious person at Pinnacle Lumber and Plywood. Multiple 911 callers had reported seeing a man running before climbing a fence into the lumberyard. Lawler says police had not been pursuing the man and it wasn't clear why he entered the yard.

Two officers found the man atop a stack of lumber. Lawler says they reported that the man was reaching into his pocket. That's when they opened fire, wounding him.

The man was taken to a hospital but Lawler said Tuesday night that the man had died from his injuries.

Lawler says he did not know whether the man was armed.

CBS affiliate KIRO reports Lawler says the two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave.
