Cops find kids in "deplorable" conditions while serving warrant

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Three children were taken from a Worcester apartment where living conditions were described as "deplorable" after police arrested two women on drug charges, reports CBS Boston.

Officers executed a search warrant at the apartment on Jan. 29, arresting 24-year-old Sheyla Montalvo and 29-year-old Natasha Riley-Murphy on drug charges, according to a police statement.

When police entered the apartment, three children -- ages three, five and six years old -- were found inside, according to the station. Police say that floors were covered in animal feces and the children's bedroom had mice feces throughout.

Officers could reportedly hear mice above their heads and even found a cat with a live mouse in its mouth, according to the statement.

While searching the apartment, police allegedly found oxycodone pills, two bags of marijuana and more than $3,000 in cash, according to CBS Boston.

Investigators said they also found a bag of cocaine while searching Riley-Murphy.

The Department of Children and Families later took custody of all three children, according to the station. Police say two of the children were Montalvo's and the third is one of her relatives who was visiting.

Both women were reportedly arrested on multiple drug charges. They were expected to be arraigned Monday in Worcester Country District Court.
