Police: Driver shot heroin while driving with child in car

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Albuquerque police say a Santa Fe man is accused of injecting himself with heroin while driving with a young child in the back seat of his car.

Police say 27-year-old Richard Nathan Diaz was arrested after an off-duty police officer saw another driver shooting up late Sunday. The off-duty officer reported what he'd seen and provided updates to dispatchers until other officers arrived and pulled over the other driver's car.

According to police, officers saw numerous syringes on the car's floor along with drug paraphernalia.

A 7-year-old girl in the car was turned over to a relative, and child-welfare authorities were notified.

Diaz remains jailed on suspicion of child abuse. It's not immediately known whether he has an attorney who could comment on the allegations.
