Cops: Decapitated body found in N.C. is escaped inmate

MERRY HILL, N.C. --A decapitated body found in northeast North Carolina has been identified as an escaped inmate, reports CBS affiliate WNCT.

The body of 26-year-old Kelvin Singleton, which was without a head and partially decomposed, was found Sunday off of a road in Merry Hill, the station reports. Singleton escaped in March from the Chowan County Detention Facility, about 13 miles away from the location where his body was found.

WAVY reported that Singleton used a weapon-like tool made from his toothbrush and forced an officer to release him. Singleton had been in jail on armed robbery and kidnapping charges, while also facing several charges in Charlotte including assault with a deadly weapon, WNCT reports.

The Bertie County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the homicide.
