Police: Boy, 11, accidentally shoots, kills brother, 12

CARROLLTON, Ohio - Authorities say an 11-year-old boy fatally shot his 12-year-old brother during a target-shooting outing in eastern Ohio.

Carroll County Sheriff Dale Williams told The (Canton) Repository for a report Monday that the younger boy accidentally shot his brother in Lee Township, near the West Virginia line. The 12-year-old, from Moore, South Carolina, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Williams says the younger boy picked up a handgun off a picnic table Friday and accidentally fired it.

The brothers were visiting a friend they knew in the state.

Carroll County Coroner Mandal Haas says they were target-shooting using real ammunition. He says the victim was struck in the head, and an autopsy will be conducted.

Authorities say charges could be filed against the person who failed to secure the weapon.
