Police arrest man suspected of shooting mom in face at NC salon

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Police say a man who allegedly shot his mother in the face at a Fayetteville spa was taken into custody Thursday afternoon, CBS affiliate KRAL reports.

Authorities said 24-year-old Kevin Tyrone Powell, Jr. shot his mother in the face near the D'aviance Spa, located inside a shopping center, at about 2 p.m.

The woman was later identified as Derema Burch, 44, and was an employee of the spa, according to the station. Police said Powell was taken into custody after returning to the scene while his mother was receiving first-aid treatment, WRAL reported.

Powell was charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

Powell was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $750,000 secured bond, according to the station.

Burch was taken to a nearby medical facility and later airlifted to UNC Hospitals at Chapel Hill. She was listed in critical but stable condition. Nobody else was hurt.

Powell was a former standout basketball player at Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville.

Although investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident, several area merchants said they aren't taking any chances and are talking about beefing up security in the strip mall.
