Plane lands in Boston after passenger allegedly assaults wife

BOSTON, Mass. -- A British Airways airplane diverted its flight, which was en route to Houston, to Boston instead, after officials say a passenger assaulted his wife, according to CBS Boston.

Officials told the station that a man on the plane had allegedly assaulted his wife and had to be restrained by several people. The plane reportedly landed just after noon.

Two Massachusetts State Police vehicles pulled up to the gate after the flight arrived at Logan Airport, according to the Boston station, and Darren Halliwell, 46, of Aspull, a village in England's Greater Manchester County, was taken into police custody.

"Our customers and crews deserve to enjoy their flights, and not to suffer any form of abuse," British Airways told CBS Boston in a statement. "This sort of [behavior] will not be tolerated, and the Captain took the decision to divert the aircraft to Boston as a precaution."

After Halliwell was taken away by police, the plane continued on to Houston.

Halliwell is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday at the East Boston District Court, the station reported.
