Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos: I'm gay

Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos had some personal news to share during an interview with author Bret Easton Ellis on his podcast, B.E.E., this week.

The singer, who recently split with his wife Kirsty Mucci, came out as gay during the podcast chat.

"I've told very few people in my personal small circles because I don't know how to talk about it, you know?" he said. "Talking with you -- we've talked before -- when someone understands what you do and what you make, it disarms you a little bit and you can just be yourself because you don't have to defend your work."

Angelakos continued: "When this was all happening recently, finally, I just decided it might be best to talk about it here. I don't really know what happened, but it's just one of those gut feelings. It's the same gut feeling I had when I said, 'OK, I kind of just need to talk to people about the fact that I am.' I'm gay. And that's it. It just has to happen. This was exactly the type of situation where I don't feel like I'm being threatened."

After word spread, Angelakos addressed things on Twitter, writing, "everything's going to be okay."

Just last month Angelakos spoke with CBS News about the latest Passion Pit album, "Kindred." He also opened up about the connection he has with his fans.

"My music is very personal...In terms of being open with my fans, the letters I get from fans and the responses that I get, it's like the most reassuring beautiful thing that I've ever been a part of. I guess I started it because I put myself out there. But they just as much put themselves as out there for me. And I never saw that coming. And I just feel like today is an amazing tool to connect with people while also doing what you love and making yourself vulnerable is a really hard thing to do. And I'm really blessed to be able to do that."

That support continues. Angelakos thanked fans this week following his reveal:
