Parents are naming their kids after Instagram filters

More parents name children after Instagram filters

Millennial parents are looking to Instagram for inspiration for baby names, according to BabyCenter.com.

The website's annual list of top baby names include Lux, Juno, Valencia and Willow -- all names of filters and tools to enhance images on Instagram, the popular photo-sharing app owned by Facebook.

The name Lux -- an Instagram feature that makes photos more vibrant -- is up 75 percent on the site's list of boy names. BabyCenter.com noted that the name has also increased in popularity for girl, although it is still not in the top 100.

The filter Ludwig, which softens and shifts colors, is also an increasingly popular name for boys. It jumped 42 percent on the boys' names list, while Amaro is up 26 percent.

Juno, a filter that was introduced in 2015 to enhance outdoor photos, increased in popularity for girls' names by 30 percent. Valencia, which gives photos a stylized, faded quality, rose 26 percent as a popular name for girls.

Other Instagram inspired names didn't do so well, however. Sierra, Walden and Lark dropped in popularity. Mayfair, Rise and Brannan didn't even appear on the list.

"This is the first time we've seen technology break through as a source of name inspiration," Linda Murray, global editor-in-chief of BabyCenter, said in a press release. "Photo-sharing is a daily and emotional part of Millennials' lives, and those two ingredients can trigger love for a name."
