Ohio couple sentenced for stealing from disabled man

AKRON, Ohio - A northeast Ohio woman has admitted she pretended to be disabled in order to befriend and steal from a developmentally disabled man. Her husband also participated in this plot.

Carol Hulett, 36, of Akron, was sentenced to four years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to burglary, forgery and theft from the disabled. She was sentenced to an additional nine months for violating probation.

Meanwhile, Hulett's husband, Shaun Hulett, also pleaded guilty to burglary in the same case. He was sentenced to two years in prison.

Prosecutors said Carol Hulett pretended to be disabled and eventually befriended a 60-year-old disabled man her husband had noticed riding the bus. Prosecutors said she convinced the man to cash three of his paychecks and give her the money.

CBS affiliate WOIO reported Carol Hulett used the alias Emily Parker and made the victim believe that she was his girlfriend. The man's family became suspicious when he left his house to meet the woman and had all of his banking information with him. The family contacted authorities in February.

Shaun Hulett is still facing charges in an unrelated alleged purse-snatching incident.
